Can I use copyrighted resources to enhance my teaching materials?

Answer

There is an exception to copyright law called Illustration for Instruction that means you can use copyright work in teaching with the following conditions:

  • for a non-commercial purpose,
  • by a person giving or receiving instruction (or preparing for giving or receiving instruction), and
  • accompanied by a sufficient acknowledgement (unless this would be impossible for reasons of practicality or otherwise).

Generally speaking, your use of a copyright work must be solely for the purposes of teaching. This may be part of the work or may even be the whole work, where appropriate.

The use of the work must be "fair" and we have licenses that enable to use various copyright works in the classroom or online.

Please visit our copyright guide to find out more. You can also contact your subject librarian for advice on using our resources and licenses for teaching.
