Can I play music from a streaming service such as Spotify or Google Play to my students?

Answer

If you do not have a license to play music to students, then you must rely on an exception to copyright law called Illustration for Instruction. This allows you to make use of a "fair" amount of a copyright work for the purposes of teaching. Both Spotify’s and Google Play’s terms and conditions restrict use to “personal, non-commercial use", however, this exception has the provision of "no contractual override" which means you can still makes use of these services to play music for the purpose of teaching.
