Referencing/citing is an important part of academic work. It serves a number of purposes:
- To give credit to other people's work and ideas.
- To provide the reader (often the marker or examiner) with evidence of the breadth and depth of reading done.
- To enable the reader to follow up your references and locate the original works.
- To avoid accusations of plagiarism, which is a serious academic offense and can lead to loss of marks and failing the module or in some cases, the entire degree.
